Project: Crisis intervention and safety verification for the camera mirror system of the McLaren Speedtail

Client: SMR automotive GmbH
Period: September 2019 – March 2020
Role: Functional Safety Engineer & Consultant

I was called in as an external expert at SMR during an extremely time-critical phase to secure an impending delivery promise for the McLaren Speedtail hypercar. With an initial delivery date promised in just four months, the entire safety case argument for the innovative camera-based rearview mirror system was still missing.

My core responsibilities and results:

  • Saved the schedule with rapid analysis: My main task was to create the missing critical software safety analysis. After a very short training period, I designed and created the complete analysis in record time by October. At the beginning of November, I successfully presented it to the end customer McLaren and secured their final approval, clearing the biggest hurdle for vehicle delivery.
  • Timely creation of the safety case: Based on my analysis, we then created the complete safety case as a team of two FuSi engineers. We provided all the necessary safety evidence on schedule, enabling the first vehicles to be delivered on time.
  • Proactive development of a sustainable FuSi system: After the acute project was successfully completed, I proactively used the remaining time from January to March to establish a comprehensive framework for functional safety at SMR. I created future-proof guidelines, methodologies, and strategies to give the company a robust foundation for future safety projects.

Project completion:
The mandate was terminated in March 2020 due to global uncertainties caused by the onset of the corona virus pandemic.

Project impact: My fast and precise work in a high-pressure situation saved a critical project and ensured the timely delivery of a prestigious hypercar. In addition, I left the customer with a sustainable process foundation that will significantly improve the quality and efficiency of future safety-related developments.
