Assignments as a functional safety expert for the E³ software platform

Client: CARIAD SE (Volkswagen Group)
Role: Functional Safety Engineer / Expert

I was engaged by CARIAD in two consecutive, focused assignments as an external expert to ensure functional safety for key components of the new E³ software platform.

Project 1: Safety concepts for subsystems (rear light & clamp control)
January 2022 – February 2022

  • My task was to analyze and update the safety concepts for the "Rear Light Manager" and "Clamp Control" (energy management) components. The goal was to ensure their compliance with ISO 26262 as part of the platform's further development.

Project 2: Functional safety for over-the-air update systems
March 2021 – April 2021

  • In this assignment, I was responsible for evaluating and refining the safety architecture of the highly critical online remote update components (OTA, ORU, LUM) to guarantee safety throughout the entire software update process in the vehicle.

Project completion and framework conditions:

In both projects, a central prerequisite for standard-compliant safety work was the in-depth analysis and processing of requirements. Due to procedural and technical hurdles on the customer side, the necessary access to central processing tools, e.g., the requirements management tool (IBM DOORS) or the collaboration tool MSOutlook, could not be provided throughout the entire project period.

Since it was not possible to process the safety requirements completely and traceably without this access, and my quality standards for safety-critical work could not be met, I consistently terminated the contracts after exhausting all possible solutions and in consultation with the customer.
