Project: Development of the overall vehicle safety concept for the INEOS Grenadier

Client: AKKA GmbH & Co. KG (on behalf of INEOS Automotive)
Period: March 2019 – September 2019
Role: Functional Safety Engineer (complete vehicle)

As part of an extraordinary greenfield project, AKKA acted as the central system development department for the newly founded automotive manufacturer INEOS. As the responsible Functional Safety Engineer, my task was to design the safety architecture for the entire vehicle – the Grenadier SUV –from scratch and to coordinate the collaboration between all development partners.

My core responsibilities and results:

  • Overall vehicle responsibility for functional safety: I acted as the central authority for all FuSa issues at the vehicle level. I was the primary contact for the OEM and ensured that a consistent and coherent safety concept was developed.
  • Creation of basic safety artifacts: I carried out the initial and decisive steps in the safety lifecycle, including item definitions for the relevant vehicle systems and comprehensive hazard and risk analyses (HARAs) for the entire vehicle.
  • Coordination of development partners and suppliers: One of my main tasks was to manage and harmonize the safety activities of various international development partners and system suppliers. I ensured that their subsystems integrated seamlessly into the overall safety concept of the vehicle.

Project completion:
The project was characterized by close cooperation with the developer of the base vehicle. As part of a strategic realignment, the OEM INEOS decided to bundle overall responsibility for development and assign it directly to the system developer of the base vehicle. As a result, the development contract was withdrawn from AKKA. The comprehensive safety concepts and analyses I created were fully documented and handed over as a valuable basis for further work.

Project impact:
I laid the foundation for the safety concept of the entire vehicle and successfully managed the complex interfaces between the OEM, development service provider, and suppliers.
